Blacksmithing – Bush Craft: Railroad Spike Tomahawk

In this class, students will forge their own tomahawk, complete with handle, from a new railroad spike.

This is the perfect companion for the trail and campsite.  It’s lightweight and sharp and handles camp chores with ease.  It is perfect for chopping and splitting kindling. And we leave the railroad spike head intact, making an ideal pommel for driving tent stakes and any other hammering needs.

Forging techniques include upsetting, slitting, and drifting, drawing out and peening, normalizing, hardening and tempering.
