Cabin Life at Hagood Mill Historic Site

Our cabins provide a unique window into the daily lives, challenges, and resilience of the early settlers who shaped the Upstate region. These simple yet sturdy structures, like the Hagood Cabin (early 1800s) and the Murphree-Hollingsworth Cabin (1791), stand as tangible reminders of a time when survival depended on resourcefulness, community, and an intimate connection to the land.

Historic Cabins: Living History

The site features two historic cabins that offer unique insights into the lives of early Upstate residents:

  • Hagood Cabin (Early 1800s)
Built by Benjamin Hagood, this cabin is a classic example of early Appalachian craftsmanship. The simple yet functional design reflects the lifestyle of the region’s settlers, who used locally sourced materials to construct homes that could withstand the elements. The Hagood Cabin provides a window into the daily routines of a family in the early 19th century, from cooking and heating to sleeping arrangements and storage.

  • Murphree-Hollingsworth Cabin (1791)
Constructed for Baptist minister William Murphree, this cabin is one of the oldest structures in the area. Its design and construction showcase the resourcefulness of settlers and the importance of community in the region’s early days. The cabin later became home to the Hollingsworth family, adding layers of history to its story.

Additional Structures Depicting Rural Life

In addition to the historic cabins, several other buildings at Hagood Mill Historic Site provide a broader picture of life in the Upstate during years past:

  • Barn: A traditional barn showcasing tools, equipment, and practices essential to farming and livestock care.
  • Moonshine Still: A replica still that tells the story of moonshine production and its role in the local economy.
  • Blacksmith Shop: A working forge where demonstrations highlight the skill and artistry of blacksmithing.
