Discover the abundance of edible and medicinal plants growing all around us in this hands-on Beginner Foraging Class at Hagood Mill Historic Site. Whether you’re new to foraging or simply curious about the nutritional treasures hidden in your own backyard, this class will provide a practical introduction to identifying wild plants commonly found throughout the Upstate of South Carolina.
Participants will begin with a brief classroom session covering the fundamentals of safe and responsible foraging, including basic identification techniques, ethical harvesting practices, and plants that should be avoided. We will then venture onto the beautiful Hagood Mill grounds for a guided foraging walk where you’ll learn to recognize several edible and medicinal species currently in season.
Along the way, we’ll discuss how these wild foods can be incorporated into everyday meals and explore their remarkable nutritional benefits. You’ll also learn about edible landscaping plants and how cultivating a gardenscape can complement a healthy, self-sufficient lifestyle.
Food is medicine, and many of the plants we consider “weeds” are among the most nutrient-dense foods available. This class will help bridge the gap between traditional foraging knowledge and modern wellness practices, giving you practical tools to begin your own foraging journey.
