Soil: From the Ground Up is the first in a hands-on series dedicated to the art of no-till gardening. In this engaging workshop, students will learn how to prepare a garden site by layering organic matter to build healthy, fertile soil. The class will explore alternative soil-building methods that can be easily applied at home, whether in an urban garden, raised beds, or larger garden plots.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of no-till gardening—a sustainable approach that preserves soil structure while enriching it with organic materials and mulch. We will discuss why no-till gardening works, its many advantages, and the different names, methods, and principles behind this time-tested technique.
This course is hands-on, so be ready to dig in and get dirty! Wear appropriate clothing or bring a change of clothes and shoes.

About the Instructors:
Donna and Lenard Putney bring a lifetime of experience in agriculture and horticulture. On their permaculture homestead, they have transformed ten acres of pasture and eroded subsoil into a lush landscape filled with wild meadows, wooded trails, and thriving food forests with up to 12 inches of rich, black soil. Their land is now abundant with fruit trees, perennial food plants, and the harmonious sounds of nature.
