Camp Hagood: Teen Edition (Ages 13–17)

Step into the past and experience hands-on history like never before at Hagood Mill Historic Site. Camp Hagood: Teen Edition is a one-day immersive camp designed specifically for teens ages 13–17 who want to learn traditional skills, explore Appalachian heritage, and create something with their own hands.

A Day of Old-Time Skills & Hands-On Learning

Campers will rotate through four unique class experiences throughout the day. Each session lasts approximately 70–100 minutes, giving participants the opportunity to learn foundational skills and complete a small project in each discipline.

🔨 Blacksmithing with Kevin Thompson

Learn the basics of shaping metal using fire and hammer. Kevin Thompson brings over 25 years of experience and regularly demonstrates at Hagood Mill’s Third Saturday Folklife Festivals. Campers will get a rare opportunity to work at the forge and experience this historic craft firsthand.

🧺 Basket Weaving with Nancy Basket

Discover the art of traditional basketry using natural materials. Nancy Basket, a recipient of the South Carolina Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award, shares both her craftsmanship and rich cultural storytelling rooted in Native American traditions.

🪶 Leathercraft with Amy Bright

Create functional and beautiful leather items while learning foundational leatherworking skills. Amy Bright combines her craftsmanship with a passion for teaching practical, hands-on skills that connect past and present.

🌿 Foraging & Plant Medicine with Donna Putney

Explore the natural world and learn how plants have been used for food and medicine for generations. Donna Putney brings over 50 years of knowledge in plant identification, foraging, and herbal practices.

What to Expect

This is a hands-on, educational, and fun experience where teens will:

  • Learn traditional Appalachian skills
  • Gain confidence through creating with their hands
  • Connect with history in a meaningful way
  • Spend the day outdoors at one of the Upstate’s most unique historic sites

Please note: Due to time constraints, projects in each class will be introductory in scope.
